Why aren't more legacy fundraisers moving into leadership positions?

Recently, I had a long conversation with Suzanne Watts at Smee and Ford about this question.

Out of curiosity, I pulled up a random list of 30 Heads/Directors of Fundraising from different charities. Not a single one had a legacy fundraising background. Not one.

Why is that? I can’t help but feel that because legacy income takes years to materialise, the powers-that-be don’t take it as seriously as other income streams. That’s disappointing.

Legacy fundraising isn’t just sitting around waiting for gifts to roll in. It takes strategy, relationship-building, and long-term vision—exactly the qualities you want in a fundraising leader. I’ve recruited and worked with incredible legacy fundraisers who have what it takes to lead wider fundraising teams.

Maybe legacy fundraisers aren’t putting themselves forward. Or maybe they’re being overlooked. Either way, something needs to change. Charities are missing out on talented leaders who could bring so much to the table.
